You can hardly visit a Muslim event without listening to different kinds of music. You would see Muslim children, youths, parents dancing to songs of different kinds in a very crazy manner. This is a bad legacy. Go to weddings, namings and all kinds of events. Even during eids, this is what you will find in many Muslim gatherings. It is more worrisome that some people now claim to be Islamic musicians when music itself is haram according to Islamic injunctions.
Music is surely one of the lizard holes of the Jews ans Christians that Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم had warned us about. Ibn ‘Abbaas رضي الله عنه said the words of Allaah in Q31:6 relates singing and use of musical intruments. This is also affirmed by Mujaahid رحمه الله that it means playing with the drum.[Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40].
Al-Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله said: this aayah (Q31:6) was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments [Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451].
Sheikh ul-Islaam, Ibn Taymiyah رحمه الله said: ma’aazif are haraam, and ma’aazif means musical instruments according to the scholars of (Arabic) language. This word includes all of such instruments. [al-Majmoo’, 11/535)].
In his explanation of that verse (Q31:6), Al Imaam As-Sa’di رحمه الله said:
This includes all manner of haraam speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages kufr and disobedience; the words of those who say things to refute the truth and argue in support of falsehood to defeat the truth; and backbiting, slander, lies, insults and curses; the singing and musical instruments of the Shaytaan; and musical instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly benefit. [Tafseer al-Sa’di, 6/150]
I was in a Tricycle earlier this afternoon. The rider was playing some annoying music. I couldn’t stop him. But I detest it in my mind. I later had to interrupt when some little little children started singing the stupid song along with the artiste, word for word. I had to tell them to stop singing it. I advised the rider to stop playing music, but he didn’t listen.
